Joy is meant to be expressed in every facet of your life. Not perfection. Not ideal, but the deepest kind of joy that comes from the sources that hit you deep. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For me that’s the color of desert dirt. Fringe on shade jackets and clothes that look and feel like sculpture. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also find it in the simple real moments that are held in hearts and turn soft with memory. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s film. It’s slowing down. It’s stripping away the excess and experiencing the essence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s life in all it’s beautiful complexity and in the creative contribution I get to make as an educator and photographer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m going to hop on here to go live in just a bit - I hope you’ll join me as we explore some of the creative outlets and systems that have helped me already in 2019.
Creativity is something we’re born with. It’s image, but it also needs to be cultivated. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I must admit creativity has taken so many forms for me throughout my life. For most of it I’ve been a ballerina. Now a photographer, but the creative outlet I didn’t expect was the one I find in raising my children. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You try to find another reward that will motive four littles under 10 enough to curb the complaints! Because I’ll tell you what, I’ve tried them all!! 😂😂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But truly it’s something that has given me more fulfillment and pushed me than anything else. And it shows in my work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s a tension we all feel in our lives as we push and pull between our personal and our work life - in reality just our life. And I want to share a little of the ground I’ve found to stand in. Will you join me live Friday morning at 10:30am pst as I share some of the things I think will help you too!?

The space I feel is incredible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Life doesn’t have balance. It’s more like juggling. And right now my Instagram ball is low because my personal life is high. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve been Konmariing my house @konmari.co . Yes it’s a beautiful verb and it’s giving me space. Space in my home. Space in my heart. And oddly space in my mind. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What happened was we were trying to buy a house but it hasn’t worked out. In my stress and frustration I dove in head first to clearing my clutter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The happy side effects have been a clearer mind and sense of well being. So while my professional ball feels low I can’t help but feel that putting this personal ball high for a bit will improve everything over all!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
More space means I feel like I have more time and I want to create more deeply - not more things but more deeply. It’s been truly transformative! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anyone else finding themselves putting a part of their life in order and it’s spreading to the other parts?!
What is a portrait? A face? A person? The tension of someone in their space and surroundings? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To me a portrait makes me feel the person - of course it can at best only capture a single complexity of that person but it definitely encapsulates one truth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To me it doesn’t have to be the eyes or even the face. A friend of mine has the most beautiful collar bone shot that she uses for her profile. It encapsulates this truth of hers perfectly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On my website I have a portrait of Amelia - but it’s her legs walking through light and sage brush. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Portraits share at best a single truth.

FOMO oddly happens to me when I see something I wish I’d done. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ll see a feed that expresses an idea I’ve been trying to mull through with absolute perfect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Or an image that takes my breath away in an environment that feels so far from me. Because the reality of where I live and the limitations I feel because of it sometimes aren’t changing anytime soon. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But then I have a day like yesterday. A day where I get to shoot and realize that everything I need can always be found. I’ll be sharing a few bts in my stories today!
So which film camera? Is there a perfect one? In my humble opinion ....
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The perfect film camera is the one that helps you get started. I started with a professional grade 35mm camera because I knew I wanted to shoot weddings on film. I also knew I’d be upgrading to medium format as soon as I could. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But it depends on what you want to shoot and how you want to shoot. I love having a camera that makes me work for the shot. Aka a camera with manual exposure and manual focus. My personal preference right now is the Rollie because I have to move so slow with it it always makes me see more and shoot carefully. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So - let’s talk film cameras! If you need a recommendation tell me what you’d like to be shooting. If you’re already shooting tell me what you started with and what you’re using now!!
Please forgive me for saying this! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But I confess I am not an animal person! Let me back up - at this time in my life caring for one more precious creature feels completely beyond my capabilities! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That being said every time a couple brings a beautiful pup into the mix I cannot help but smile and cheer them on. Especially when it’s a collie with this much love and personality!
In motion always. Together not enough. But always bathed in beauty and when I have it my way golden light and sand 😊️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But I’m finding my way. Realizing I’ve let things marinate long enough. It’s time to take action and learn in the doing. Which most likely means failing and trying again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But I’m finding the simple wins are the best. They give me hope and keep the momentum going. So planning for more simple wins as I move towards larger goals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’d love it if you’d share your simple wins with me today. Let’s keep each other motivated.
Every night he comes into my room to snuggle me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It usually happens around midnight. The night isn’t complete without his added warmth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After he was born I realized I needed more creativity in my life and picked up my camera again. The rest is history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This year his little hands and the hands of three other little people in my life are pulling me into a deep and beautiful kind of creation - the creation and cultivation of knowing a person from scratch. Of creating what that means and how we get to learn from each other. And the power that connection brings to my life and fills all its corners. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Creating that kind of work - of a full life because of those we fill it with - is the most meaningful kind of creation we can participate in. Photo by @jessicahaderlie
